Bologna

Our day trip to Bologna allowed us to see a wide range of interesting sites, while walking through a beautiful, calm, and very authentic Italian city. Our family style meal also allowed us to try some amazing traditional dishes! -Abbey, Fall 2019

Bologna, located in the northern part of Italy, is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. Only a short train ride away from Florence, it is a city that has a beautifully restored historical center and is home to the oldest university of the world. Bologna is full of students, musicians and an international community which perhaps has given it a certain artistic, bohemian vibe that is appreciated by all who visit.  Furthermore, it’s an impressive hub for the agricultural and financial industries, and it is also the headquarter for numerous companies (in all sectors; from mechanical to food).

Bologna can easily be done in a day or as part of a stop in an overnight trip. Students discover the city in Piazza Maggiore, where Giambolognas Neptune fountain is located. From there they walk through the streets to visit Santa Maria della Vita which houses the 7 beautiful terracotta sculptures from Niccolò D’Arca, The Lamentation of Christ, finished in the 15th century. Afterwards a visit of Santo Stefano complex and then a walk towards the bologna twin towers, which Dante referenced in the Inferno. Heading back towards town, the last visit at the church of San Domenico unveils a little known about Michelangelo sculpture, as well as the remains of St.Dominic himself. A fascinating stop at the anatomical theatre, located in the old university, where students who sat in the high seats above were taught anatomy lessons for medical and even artistic purposes.

Bologna is much more than just history- it’s known for its famous porticos- almost 25 miles long, as well as its lively feel. Full of shops and little restaurants and eateries, markets and bookstores, its sure to entertain. One of the best parts of Bologna is the Bolognese cuisine. Students are taken for a group meal where they’ll taste bologna specialties such as: mortadella, Bolognese sauce, tortellini, and much more. Hearty food and a friendly culture have left past students with many memorable experiences in Bologna.
