Assisi

“Assisi was just one of the many cities we explored that was centered around so much history and culture of Italy. Through the help of our professor’s lectures in the heart of Assisi, we were able to submerse ourselves academically and through our own exploration.” Daniela, Fall 2019

Located in the region of Umbria, in central Italy, about 2 hours south east of Florence, is Assisi. Assisi is known as the birthplace of St.Francis, who founded the Franciscan order in 1208 and St.Clare who founded the Poor Clares. The history of Assisi began in 1000 BC by immigrants who found Assisi as a place to create fortified settlements, later known as the Umbrians. Over the years it was taken over by the Etruscans, then Romans.

Today visitors come to see the beautiful Basilica of St.Francis, considered one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage, though it is appreciated for more than its religious importance: the architecture is impressive as it is built into the side of a hill and is actually made up of two churches- the upper and lower- and a crypt, and inside are 13th century frescos.

Students will visit the town of Assisi, and hear the history, as well as visit the Basilica of St.Clare and the 9th century Santa Maria degli Angeli before taking free time to explore and take pictures of the town and the view from above.
