The abbey of San Galgano is located in the province of Siena, about 40 minutes southeast of the city center. The abbey holds a rich history, and perhaps even legend, as it is said to be the true spot of the Sword in Stone.
The 13the century abbey is a Gothic style and completely roofless, which creates an enchanting effect. At one time there was a roof, but a strike of lightning caused the bell-tower to fall onto the church destroying the roof, and from that moment it was removed completely and deconsecrated. Walking through the abbey, looking up towards the sky, is truly enchanting and seems as if it should be in a fairy tale. In fact, in this location, students are able to see the real sword in the stone, as Galgano Guidotti, a knight born nearby that lived a morally loose life, converted to Christianity and thereby  drove a sword into a stone as symbolism of abandoning his old life.
