Amalfi & Positano

AMALFI & POSITANO

My favorite trip from my time last summer with FSU Florence was when we visited the Amalfi Coast and Positano. The FSU Florence family worked tremendously hard to make sure we got the most out of our experience and the weekend from beginning to end was a dream. The weekend began with an amazing breakfast followed by going a boat for a day full of fun and music. We sailed up and down the Amalfi Coast having the best time and even stopping in Positano singing the war chant on the beach, after the best boat day the night didn’t end there and we danced the night away with a DJ the hotel brought out for us.- Daiza, Summer 2019

Easily referred to as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, the Amalfi coast is a stretch of coastline of the Salerno gulf, located in southern Italy alongside the Tyrrhenian sea.

The town of Amalfi itself was the capital of the maritime republic, referred to as the Duchy of Amalfi. From 800 to 1200 AD it was considered important in the trading world.

Positano, about 45 minutes south of Amalfi, was named after Poseidon, God of the Sea. It was also an important market port as Amalfi and prospered until the 17th century, though it did not remain so, as at the beginning of the 19th century it became a fishing village with little income, and have the town emigrated.

Today, it is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the world.

Students enjoy the full day excursion to both Amalfi and Positano, departing the morning by boat and stopping first in front of Praiano, floating through they idyllic spot of local mythology, the three islets of Li Galli, where in Homer’s Odyssey Orpheus defeated the singing Sirens.

Students will then disembark at Amalfi, where they can visit the 9th century cathedral, dedicated to St.Andrew, and housing his relics or try the famous seafood- or just relax on the beach. A couple of hours later they will depart for Positano with its pebbled beaches and steep streets, with shops displaying intricately painted ceramic tile in blues and greens. Positano also has scenic walks and winding paths that lead to small beaches where students can relax.
