Fiesole

Our first program excursion was to a small city called Fiesole, just north of Florence. It was the perfect first experience of the program. There, we walked around as the director, Frank Nero, told historical stories of the town. We got to explore ancient grounds and baths, a beautiful church with bells ringing across town, and ended our time with a panoramic view of Florence. As we took pictures and shared excitement of the next six weeks to come, I realized that studying with FSU IP Florence was the best decision I have ever made.-Katie, Summer 2017

Fiesole is located high on a hill, about 3 miles outside of Florence. Its history is even older than Florence, as it was founded by the Etruscans in 8-9th century BC. In 283 BC it was conquered by the Romans, and over the years its rulers changed from the Goths to the Byzantines before becoming independent in the medieval ages. Over the years many famous writers, from Dante to Decameron have spoken about the town.

Students will get to take in the views of the city upon arriving as all of Florence can be seen below, before stepping back in time, visiting the famous archaeological site with its Roman Theatre from 1st century BC, thermal spas that date back to SIllas time and an Etruscan temple from 3rd century BC.

Afterwards they’ll take a hilly walk up to the monastery of St.Francis, where they views are even more spectacular, and they can find windy hidden paths behind the monastery which take them back to the piazza below
